Esa Pietilä

His multifaceted work on the saxophone deals with
different musical genres. Beyond jazz it embraces
contemporary and classical music. He is internationally
acclaimed virtuoso tenor saxophonist and a prolific
composer. Pietilä is equally at home in improvised solo as
a soloist for orchestras, other large ensembles, chamber
groups and choirs. He has performed eg. at festivals in
USA, Canada, Italy, Japan, Germany, Switzerland,
Norway, France, Iceland, Brazil, Cuba and Australia.
2016 Pietilä premiered The Tenor Saxophone Concerto
by internationally awarded composer Kalevi Aho, who
composed and dedicated the concerto for Pietilä. In 2014
Pietilä performed with one of the world’s most renowned
conductors, Esa-Pekka Salonen with Avanti! Chamber
Orchestra, premiering Pietilä’s ‘Graffiti Play’, a concerto
for saxophone, contemporary jazz trio and chamber
orchestra. In 2013 Pietilä premiered the saxophone

concerto ‘Grounds’by Finnish composer Eero Hämeen-
niemi, with conductor Santtu Matias Rouvali. In addition

he has worked e.g. with conductors Ville Matvejeff, Tibor
Boganuyi and Hossein Pishkar, performing his ow music
and other works.
2016 Pietilä was awarded the Jazz musician of the year
(Yrjö Prize) by The Finnish Jazz Federation. He has
released eleven albums as leader, of which two are
completely improvised solo recordings.
